6 Appliances to Keep in Check Before the Winter Arrives

Posted on October 25, 2023

Winter is knocking at your door, and that means it’s time to get your home prepared for the cold season. While you’re likely thinking about insulating your windows and tuning up your heating system, don’t forget about your trusty appliances. As the temperature drops, your appliances often work harder, so it’s essential to ensure they’re in top shape to keep you comfortable during the winter months.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through six critical appliances that deserve your attention before winter arrives. By checking and maintaining these appliances now, you’ll not only avoid inconvenient breakdowns but also save money on energy bills and enjoy a cozy winter at home.

Furnace or Heating System

Your heating system is the unsung hero of your home during winter. It’s the perfect time to schedule a professional inspection and tune-up.

A well-maintained furnace will run efficiently, providing consistent warmth without causing spikes in your energy bill. Be sure to replace air filters regularly to maintain good indoor air quality and prevent strain on your system.

Fireplace and Chimney

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, you’ll want it to work flawlessly during the chilly months. Schedule an inspection and cleaning of your chimney to remove any creosote build-up, which can lead to chimney fires.

Ensure your damper opens and closes correctly, and don’t forget to check your fireplace accessories, like the grate and screen.

Water Heater

Hot water is a necessity, especially in cold weather. A properly functioning water heater is crucial. Inspect the water heater for leaks, and if it’s more than a few years old, consider draining and flushing it to remove sediment build-up.

You can also lower the temperature setting to save on energy costs while still enjoying warm showers. You can get a swim spa hot tub to warm yourself up in the winter.

Refrigerator and Freezer

Your refrigerator and freezer work harder in the winter to maintain their set temperatures. Ensure the gaskets on the doors are airtight, and that the coils at the back or underneath are clean.

Overloaded freezers are less efficient, so consider decluttering and organizing. Also, verify that the defrost cycle is functioning as it should. Get your refrigerator checked by an appliance repair technician for preventive maintenance.

Humidifier

Winter often means dry indoor air, which can be uncomfortable and potentially harmful to your health. If you use a humidifier, clean it thoroughly and replace any worn-out parts.

Maintain an optimal humidity level in your home to keep your skin, respiratory system, and wooden furnishings in good condition. A high quality humidifier can help improve the indoor air quality.

Space Heaters and Portable Fans

If you use space heaters or portable fans to regulate the temperature in specific rooms, inspect them for safety.

Check cords and plugs for wear and tear, and ensure the heating elements are clean and functioning correctly. Never leave space heaters unattended, and keep them away from flammable objects. Make sure all the wire connections are safe and away from access.
